Meet Don Hickman

A Neighbor. A Leader. A Voice for Ogden Valley.

I grew up in the rural West—splitting time between the mountain communities of Colorado and the foothills of California’s Sierra Nevada. My high school bus ride was over an hour and a half each way, and the county I called home didn’t have a single stoplight. Life was simple, grounded, and built on hard work, and knowing your neighbors. Those values never left me.

At 18, I joined the U.S. Air Force Academy and began what became a 25-year military career. I served all over the world and retired as a Colonel after leading hundreds of airmen and managing multi-million-dollar operations. I was a war planner at the Pentagon on 9/11. I’ve worked across government, industry, and nonprofits—and I’ve learned that true leadership means listening first, then acting with integrity.

My high school sweetheart Stacey and I married in 1987. We saw the world, moving 14 times, living in seven states and Germany, and choosing to raise our family in Ogden Valley when I retired from the Air Force in 2012. We were drawn to the land, the space, the pace of life, and the sense of community. We live near the former Monastery, irrigate our pasture with Huntsville Irrigation Company water, and enjoy riding our horses. Every year I stack hay in the barn, toss bales in the snow, and drive home slow—just like any good neighbor would expect.

We love this Valley. For many years I’ve been a referee and coach for our local kids in the AYSO soccer league. I’m a horseman, and love horse packing in the wilderness, up Middle Fork, and around North Fork Park. I hunt, fish, and ski. I am equally comfortable in City Hall and mucking out horse stalls. I’ve built fences and built policy, coached kids and coached executive teams, and I care deeply about the future we’re creating here.

We are all in this together. We are all looking at the future we face and deciding for ourselves the future we want for our kids and grandkids here in District 5 and Ogden Valley. If it was easy, it would already have been done. Growth is coming whether we like it or not, and I will work with you to make sure we grow wisely, protect what makes this Valley special, and build a local government that serves the people, not the other way around.

I’m running for City Council in District 5 because I believe that we can create a future that we all want. Successfully working with executive councils, be they non-profit Boards, elected city councils, or Colonels in the Pentagon, can be really challenging. I am a team builder. I seek out wise council from all sides of an issue before I decide, as I know that I do not know all the history nor have all the answers.

This isn’t about politics—it’s about home. I’m not running to build a résumé. I’m running because I love this place, and I want to give back to the people who’ve welcomed us and shaped our lives here.

Don’s Experience

I have 38+ years of experience in the private/business, public and non-profit sectors. In the private sector, I led a $30 million/year division with over 85 employees spread across the country. As a small businessman I own/operate Hickman Group, LLC and A Helping Hand Financial Coaching. I am Ogden Valley’s only Dave Ramsey-trained personal financial coach. A Proven Plan for Financial Success - Ramsey I teach people how to live on a budget – I will make sure the new City does as well. I served on the Board of Directors of Common Spirit Holy Cross Hospital in Layton 2009-12.

In the Air Force, I led teams of hundreds of people, managed $11 billion/year programs, oversaw multi-million-dollar government contracts, and wrote policies affecting the 680,000-person worldwide organization. I was twice assigned to the Pentagon, including as one of the war planners on 911. I understand how bureaucracies and governments work, and how to ensure they are efficient and effective. I developed and coordinated policies and legislation between the Air Force, Congress, and White House.

I am a trained Incident Commander and Emergency First Responder. In the Air Force I led multiple real world and exercise crisis responses. I know how the interagency process works. The new city requires comprehensive plans. I’ve written and implemented multiple business plans, non-profit strategic plans, and numerous contingency and project plans in the Air Force affecting worldwide operations.

Water is the lifeblood of District 5.  I have a masters degree in Civil Engineering, with an emphasis on water and wastewater.  I’ve operated two state-certified water quality labs early in his career.  I irrigate my pasture with seven shares of Huntsville Irrigation Company water.  I get it.

I serve our community.  For 13 years I’ve been on the Board of Trustees of Ogden Valley Adaptive Sports, including seven as president and twice as its acting Executive Director.  ogdenvalleyadaptivesports.org.  I’m a volunteer coach and guide with the US Paralympic Nordic (cross country) Ski Team, and coach cross country skiing for persons with disabilities at Ogden Nordic (North Fork park). www.ogdennordic.com .  The 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are coming to Snowbasin, and I can help us best benefit from the world coming to our doorstep.

I was on the Board of the Ogden Nature Center for 10+ years, serving as its President, and recently as the acting Executive Director for 6 months. www.ogdennaturecenter.org.  I led the Utah Military Families Foundation, and about 10 years ago we wrapped its operations into the Team Hill Support Organization.
