Meet Don Hickman
A Neighbor. A Veteran. A Voice for Ogden Valley.
I grew up in the rural West—splitting time between the farming communities of Colorado and the foothills of California’s Sierra Nevada. My high school bus ride was over an hour and a half each way, and the town I called home didn’t have a single stoplight. Life was simple, grounded, and built on hard work, self-reliance, and knowing your neighbors. Those values never left me.
At 18, I joined the U.S. Air Force Academy and began what became a 25-year military career. I served all over the world and retired as a Colonel after leading thousands of airmen and managing multi-billion-dollar operations. I was a war planner at the Pentagon on 9/11. I’ve worked across government, industry, and nonprofits—and I’ve learned that true leadership means listening first, then acting with integrity.
When my wife Stacey and I retired from military life, we chose Ogden Valley as our home. We were drawn to the land, the space, the pace of life, and the sense of community. We bought property near the old Monastery, irrigate our pasture with local water shares, and raise horses. Every year I stack hay in the barn, toss bales in the snow, and drive home slow—just like any good neighbor would expect.
I love this Valley. I hunt, fish, and ski. I coach with the U.S. Paralympic Nordic Team and volunteer with Ogden Valley Adaptive Sports. I’ve built fences and built policy, coached kids and coached executive teams, and I care deeply about the future we’re creating here.
I’m running for City Council in District 5 because I believe this community deserves steady, experienced leadership—someone who will represent the people who live here, not outside interests. Growth is coming whether we like it or not, and I want to make sure we grow wisely, protect what makes this Valley special, and build a local government that serves the people, not the other way around.
This isn’t about politics—it’s about home. I’m not running to build a résumé. I’m running because I love this place, and I want to give back to the people who’ve welcomed us and shaped our lives here.
Experience
I have 35+ years of experience in the private, public and non-profit sectors. I’ve negotiated and implemented tens of millions of dollars’ worth of government contracts. I’ve managed >$30 million/year budgets. I’ve hired, and fired, multiple employees. I’ve drafted legislation and policies at the Federal level. I’ve served on five Board of Directors, comparable to City Councils, with the same rules of order.
I am equally comfortable in City Hall and mucking out horse stalls. We have livestock and irrigate with Huntsville Irrigation Company water. I’m a horseman, Buddy and I rode 27 miles each way into the headwaters of the Yellowstone river, I hunt and fish, and I ski. My high school sweetheart Stacey and I married in 1987 and 38 years later we’re proud to call Ogden Valley home.
I humbly ask for your vote.
